UNION CITY, NJ (WPIX)—Police say two people whose body parts were found in several bags along a curb in Linden last week, were killed inside their Union City apartment.
A garbage man and a police officer made the gruesome discovery on April 5, after a neighbor complained about flies swarming around the bags.
According to police, the victims, 48-year-old Maria Angel Torres and 49-year-old Lazaro Calero, were both asphyxiated and then dismembered.
Someone later tried to cleanup the bloodstains inside the apartment with bleach and a mop, said authorities.
Police say Torres appeared to have been renting a room in her apartment to Calero.
But they're not sure if their relationship was anything more than tenant landlord.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor, Edward DeFazio, the murders may have been carried out by one or more attackers.
He also says there were no signs of a break-in and no weapons were found.
Detectives are still reviewing video from security cameras outside the building.
No arrests have been made.
