The family of murder defendant William Walsh, Jr." id="PECLB0040134379">William Walsh Jr. has rallied to his defense, raising enough money to hire a well-known private attorney to represent him.
With financial help from extended family members, Walsh's family has
hired William Petrillo of Rockville Centre, who drew attention in 2006
when he won a murder acquittal for a Queens man even after two
witnesses said they saw the crime from five feet away.
Petrillo is the third lawyer to represent Walsh, 29, of Bethpage, since
he was arrested on charges he strangled his wife Leah Hirschel Walsh
"We love and support our son William," said Walsh's father, Bill Walsh,
of Farmingdale, in a phone interview Wednesday. "Our hearts are broken
with the loss of Leah, and we are deeply saddened for the Hirschel
Police have said William Walsh's strangled his wife during an argument,
then dumped her body and tried to make it look like she was kidnapped
on her way to work.
Walsh's original lawyer left the case after Walsh said he could not pay
his fees. The court then appointed a lawyer to represent him.
Petrillo said he has met with Walsh, who is under psychiatric observation at the Nassau County jail.
"He is mourning the loss of his wife, who he loved dearly," Petrillo said.
Petrillo said after taking a preliminary look at the evidence in the
case, he believes the police might not have had probable cause to
arrest his client. If Petrillo could prove that in court, a judge could
throw out any statement Walsh later made to police.
Eric Phillips, a spokesman for the Nassau district attorney's office,
said the police had plenty of evidence against Walsh when they arrested
