NORFOLK WINS GOAL-FILLED REMATCH IN OVERTIME
AUCOIN POSTS FOUR ASSISTS IN SETBACK
HERSHEY, Pa. Michel Ouellet chipped a goal in at 1:06 of overtime, helping the Norfolk Admirals skate past the HERSHEY BEARS by a 6-5 final score on Saturday night in the BEARS' home opener at Giant Center.
The BEARS would give the home crowd a jolt of energy when Graham Mink tallied his first goal of the season at 6:42. Mink was parked at the net front and angled a perfect Keith Aucoin pass over the glove of Admirals goaltender Jaroslav Janus.
Norfolk defenseman Radko Gudas then brought the Admirals even with a shot that beat Braden Holtby at 13:21. Gudas wristed the rebound of a Ouellet shot past a sliding Holtby. Gudas then gave Norfolk its first lead of the weekend at 18:38 when he tucked a loose puck from behind the net underneath Holtby, while the BEARS netminder was tangled up with a teammate in the crease.
Just 68 seconds later, the BEARS would get into Norfolk territory and with help from Aucoin and Mink, Sean Collins was able to let a slap shot go from the center point that banked off an Admirals forward and past Janus, sending the teams to the dressing rooms tied at 2-2.
HERSHEY would open up a two-goal lead with second-period goals from Chris Bourque and Matt Ford, but Norfolk would also score twice in a span of 28 seconds late in the frame to keep the score even at 4-4.
Norfolk forged ahead by a 5-4 score at 8:59 of the third when Cory Conacher jumped through two BEARS defensemen and beat Holtby with a shot off of the blocker.
The BEARS would make it a game once again while working on their seventh power play of the contest. Aucoin and Mink worked behind the Admirals net to force a puck in front, and Jacob Micflikier fought loose to muscle the puck behind Janus at 13:15, tying the score 5-5.
Ouellet then won the contest when he slapped at a loose puck from the bottom of the left circle and sent it off the stick of Holtby and into the net.
Holtby took the loss and fell to 1-1-0 on the season, making 22 saves. Janus improved to 2-0-0 with the win, making 32 stops.
The BEARS finished 2-for-8 on the power play, while going 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. The BEARS will travel to upstate New York to battle the Albany Devils next Friday night, October 21 at 7:00 PM. The team returns home next Saturday at 7:00 PM for a battle with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The first 4,000 fans will receive a BEARS schedule poster courtesy of Appalachian Brewing Company.
