Last night's Idol was full of plot twists and major surprises. Of course movie week continued with Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson, and Teen Screen Queen Miley Cyrus performing. The bottom three consisted of Anoop, Lil, Matt. Anoop was sent back to safety leaving Matt and Lil in the hot seat. Our Idol experts were split on who they thought should be going home, but in the end, Artie and Julie's prediction of Matt was correct. But here's where the plot thickens. The judges decided to use their one time save on Matt, giving him one more chance to prove his worth. This means that next week two contestants get sent packing. And even worse, they announced that next week is disco week. Here are our Idol Experts with their thoughts on the night.
The group song had something good going for it: Allison sneaking up behind Simon and grabbing his chair and freaking him out.
Awesome! Zac Efron looked all gross in the audience. I have no hate for that guy, but that skull cap was not working. Jennifer Hudson was Amazing...no shocker there. Miley....I love "See You Again" but not a fan of the ballads. She doesn't have a good enough voice to do it. She is way too nasally. I like when she has fun with her songs...on a good note, she looked fantastic tonight. That Jonas boy must be kicking himself on days like this.
As for the bottom three, thankfully Anoop was the first one sent back. His performance was only over shadowed by Kris's last night. Why are people not voting for him? He has talent, and he is a lovable guy? And while I do believe that Adam Lambert would be a nice guy (he does seem to have a good personality), and I wouldn't be mean to him if given the chance, he is not as perfect as you people think. He blew it last night and should have been in the bottom 3. Anoop was flawless, and he ends up in the bottom three? Disgusting,
Back to the results....I was predicting Lil (but pretty much I gave up predicting America's stupid vote and just started saying what I want the outcome to be), but I was not at all surprised by Matt. He didn't do so hot last night. He did better with the song tonight...he still had a few rough notes, but over all, better. And wow. They saved him! That is kind of a shocker.....more so a shocker from Simon and not from the rest. I am happy though because I like the guy. I think he'll shine next week during the Disco night, because the guy can take stuff like that and work it out.
There is no way that Anoop's Robin Hood Song was worse than, say, Allison or Gokey. And Anoop was definitely better than Adam's too-easy Born to Be Wild pastiche. But the die has already been cast. You can see Anoop - who formerly has presented himself very well - fraying around the edges, because he truly cannot understand why he keeps ending up in the hot seat.
Anoop does not have the voting fan support. Matt does not have the voting fan support. It does not matter how good they are, as judges' pick wild cards, they have always had an uphill battle. After the unceremonious first week exit of Jorge Nunez and Jasmine Murray, it's lucky they have survived this far at all. This entire season is an experiment in the influence of the judges and as we have seen,
As for the Judges' Save being enacted, it seems quite simple: they knew they only had two more chances to use it, and they figured that using it on Matt was an easier call than feeling forced to use it on Lil, who has sucked for weeks now. The way she has been going, if she was at risk, the judges would not want to save her.
Nevertheless, Dancer X's prediction for next week is as follows: both Anoop and Matt go home next week, no matter what they sing or how they perform, and the natural balance is restored. From then on, your order of exits is Lil, Kris, Allison, Gokey... and Adam Lambert wins it all.
I'm not sure this was the wisest use of the save technique, but it happened. Matt's pretty good, but I am with Simon when he said there's no chance Matt could win it all. I was wrong when I said he would not get the save, so you could say I was a tad surprised. I'm glad that Simon chimed in about loving the Kris version of that Oscar-nominated song. Awesome. And Anoop's Bottom Three status is annoying, and he needs to bring some serious funk next week. I mean, he's gotta kick it, "My Perogative"-style to stay safe during the Double Elimination Disco-Down Night of Doom. If Matt picks his game up and Lil continues to suck at picking songs like it's her job, Anoop could be in trouble. And saying that, I have to admit that I don't think Anoop can win it all, either, but I like him and I think he deserves to stick around longer than Matt and Lil.
At least The Save will make for an interesting show next week. As a fan of making a complete boob of myself on the dance floor of many a wedding reception, I'm a big disco/funk fan. So I'm stoked that we get to listen to seven disco hits instead of only six. Although, I'm guessing that a few of the performances will sound like horrible wedding-singer renditions of the Platform-Shoe Era, it'll definitely be a fun ride. I can't wait to see how many contestants decide to work "The Point" into their onstage routines. Is this the week that Lil busts out the afro wig so she can sing Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive"? Maybe Gokey should invest in glasses that have live goldfish in them... That would be bold.
They sped through the intro for the Ford video which was cute and then they sang "Maniac" from Flash Dance. This was actually one of the better group songs...I think they improve as people leave.
It was good seeing Jennifer Hudson back on the Idol stage. She really has done some impressive stuff since she was cast off the competition. I wasn't in love with her song, but man that girl has some pipes. She didn't seem like she was in the moment for most of the song...I think that was because she was having issues with her IFB because as soon as it came out she came back to life.
Miley Cyrus was next to grace the Idol stage. I liked her song, but not so much on the singing. I never noticed before how in her head she is, very nasally. I'm not sure how far she would have made it if she had to go through the competition herself.
Just as I predicted Anoop, Lil, and Matt were in the bottom three -so no surprise for me there. I also correctly predicted that Matt would be the one with the least amount of votes. I had a feeling that this would be the week they'd do the save as well. Matt's performance was fairly decent, and I think Simon likes him more than Lil. Besides the way Kara and Paula were going nuts during his song was kind of a give away that they wanted to save him. You knew they weren't gonna add the drama of the judges' save this year and never use it, and by not waiting to the last week it was more of a surprise.
Next week is Disco...so the contestants better watch out.
