In this heat, the last thing you want is for your power to go out.

But that’s exactly what happened Thursday afternoon in South Bend.

Over 2,600 Indiana Michigan Power customers south of downtown suffered through a power outage for several hours.

I&M spokesman David Mayne says a construction crane hit a power line in the Jackson Road area, causing a circuit breaker to trip at a substation there.

The power was restored about 3:45 p.m., earlier than expected but not soon enough for many homeowners without air conditioners who were sweltering in the heat.
