Adrien Hits Record Books As Huskies Win
Storrs, CT: Jeff Adrien's 14th rebound of the came with 5 seconds left. UConn had just wrapped up a surprisingly difficult 69-61over the Michigan Wolverines, and most of the Gampel Pavilion crowd was either cheering or headed for the exits. If public address announcer John Tuite hadn't spoken up over the din, that seemingly meaningless rebound would have been instantly forgotten, even by Adrien.
But that final rebound gave Adrien (9 points, 14 rebounds) 1,000 for his career, and made him only the fifth UConn Men's player to reach 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.
Adrien, a Senior from Springfield, MA, joined Art Quimby, Corny Thompson, Toby Kimball and Emeka Okafor in the 1,000/1,000 club.
While the feat was acknowledged after the game, and in post-game comments by the coaches and players, it would have gotten even less attention if the Huskies (22-1) hadn't held on in the final minutes.
Hasheem Thabeet (17 points, 12 rebounds, 6 blocks) and Jerome Dyson (19 points) keyed an 18-1 run midway through the second half that gave UConn a 57-47 lead with 7:28 left.
But Michigan's Stu Douglass (20 points) hit three three-pointers down the stretch, and the Wolverines got as close as 5 points before succumbing.
