With opening day looming, the Detroit Tigers released Gary Sheffield, who did not meet the expectations of the team or it's fans. The nine-time All-Star is one home run away from 500 for his career.
Detroit made the announcement Tuesday. Sheffield was in the final season of a $28 million, two-year contract extension. The organization will have to pay out $14 million of his contract. His time in the Motor City was marred by injuries.
The Tigers acquired outfielder Josh Anderson from Atlanta on Monday. They open their season in Toronto next Monday.
Sheffield hit .178 in 18 games this spring.
