"X-Men" and "Superman Returns" veteran James Marsden will play the male lead in Richard Kelly's "The Box."
Based on the Richard Matheson short story "Button, Button," "The Box" focuses on an unhappily married couple (Cameron Diaz and Marsden) who are visited by a mysterious stranger (Frank Langella). The stranger gives them a mysterious box with a button. If they push the button, they'll get great wealth, albeit with a catch -- when they push the button, somebody they don't know will die.
Matheson's story was previously adapted as an installment of the 1980s revival of the "Twilight Zone" franchise.
Production on "The Box," Kelly's follow-up to the long-delayed "Southland Tales," will begin in mid-November.
Most recently seen in "Hairspray," Marsden has the male lead opposite Katherine Heigl in "27 Dresses."
In addition, The Hollywood Reporter says that Marsden will do a cameo in Sean Anders' teen sex comedy "Sex Drive."
