On a normally slow television viewing evening, NBC's Olympic coverage allowed the network to crush the competition.
Overall, NBC averaged a 9.1 rating/16 share, delivering number on par with the combined totals for second place CBS (4.8/8) and third place FOX (4.3/7). ABC was fourth for the night with a 3.6/6.
NBC also had a comfortable margin of victory among adults 18-49, doing a 4.6 rating in the all-important demographic. FOX moved up to second with a 2.8 rating, followed by the 2.0 rating for ABC. CBS was left to trail with a 1.7 rating.
Beginning at 8 p.m. with a 7.6/14, NBC's Olympics coverage swept the night. CBS' "Numbers" and FOX's "COPS" did the same 4.1/8 to tie for second (FOX had the advantage in total viewers). ABC's airing of "Forrest Gump" pretty much spent the evening in last.
The Olympics improved to a 9.6/17 for NBC in their second hour. CBS was up to second with the 5.3/9 for "Cold Case." FOX's "America's Most Wanted" was third with a 4.5/8, easily topping ABC's "Forrest Gump."
NBC closed things out with a 10.3/19 of the 10 p.m. Olympics hour. CBS' "48 Hours Mystery" was second, though "Forrest Gump" reached its 4.2/8 peak in the hour.
