Tips on cruising with the kids
A standup comic on a Carnival Pride cruise from Baltimore to the Bahamas recently asked his audience how many were traveling with their kids. Quite a number politely clapped in response. He then asked how many were traveling without their kids. He was answered with whoops and hollers.

Coachella on the high seas
The S.S. Coachella cruise is the exact opposite of what the landlocked Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival is for most fans. Imagine what that weekend in Indio would be like without the parking hassles and dehydration, but instead with breakfast in bed and an entire ecosystem devoted to keeping you drunk at all times.

Seniors on the Go: Cruise lines turn to fees, packages
Following the lead of airlines, some big cruise lines are moving toward the airlines' pricing philosophy: Keep the base price low, and make up the difference with fees. How this will play out is anybody's guess, but if you're considering a cruise, you need to look past the initially featured rates.

Amazon basin cruise
It's 9 a.m. and the piranhas aren't biting. No matter. Our skiff is backed up to a banana tree in the flooded Amazon River basin of Peru on this warm and sunny morning, and pink dolphins are putting on a show a few feet in front of us. Yes, pink dolphins, which seem almost as happy as we are to be here.

Cruise line cabanas add more privacy to private islands
Cruise lines' private islands, with their aquamarine lagoons, barbecue lunch, live entertainment and activities, usually figure as passengers' favorite port of call on guest feedback forms. Recently, the cruise lines have been adding a greater dimension of privacy to their private islands with the introduction of cabanas that are available for rental during the port day. The cabanas can come with a variety of amenities: from complimentary use of water toys to butler service, and probably best of all, provide a private space for "upscale Robinson Crusoe" fantasies.

A big question mark hovers over the cruise industry
The first quarter of 2012 was supposed to be a sweet spot for passenger cruise lines. Wave season, as it's known, marks a time when cruise companies and travel agents roll out deep discounts on cruise vacations and rack up lots of sales.

Smaller legs of world cruises can be a deal
The British couple — she in a long black dress, he in a traditional tux — leaned against the elevator's polished wood paneling as they headed back to their cabin after an evening performance in the main showroom. Embarrassed at my casual clothes and running shoes, I stammered, "We decided not to dress up and went to the buffet instead of the main dining room."

Crowd control on a European cruise
Among European travelers, more and more people are cruising. Of course, in many ways cruising is anathema to the "back-door travel" philosophy that I've been preaching for 30 years. But I've learned it can be done thoughtfully and independently. This fall I sailed in the western Mediterranean on Royal Caribbean and in the eastern Mediterranean on Celebrity.

Cruising Asia's modern miracles and ancient wonders aboard the Ocean Princess
On a windy, showery February evening midway through our 16-night cruise from Laem Chabang, Thailand, to Shanghai, my wife, Laurel, and I stood on the balcony of our stateroom aboard the Ocean Princess, berthed at the tip of the Kowloon Peninsula. Across Victoria Harbour, the astonishing array of skyscrapers on Hong Kong Island had grown lively with light, a multicolored, ever-changing display of patterns and advertising icons — and there was more to come.

It was an idea pioneered by NCL several decades ago: offer cruise passengers a beach day on a private island (Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas' Berry Islands). The idea took hold and now a number of cruise lines (Costa, Disney, Holland America, Princess and Royal Caribbean) in addition to Norwegian Cruise Line feature stops at private islands or parts of islands for the use of their passengers.

Crossing an ocean at the end of the season
Like migratory birds, cruise ships regularly shift from one part of the world to another as the seasons shift -- from the Caribbean to Europe or South America or from Alaska or the West Coast to Asia or the South Pacific, for example. These usually twice annual exoduses are so huge that they could rival a naval armada, and they offer exceptional bargains, as well as lots of languid days at sea, and, occasionally, even unusual ports of call.
