Strong storms blanket Mammoth, close roads in Yosemite
It’s showtime in the Eastern Sierra.
A strong blizzard was fleecing Mammoth Mountain late Thursday, with up to four feet of snow expected at high elevations, as the Sierra resort prepped for the holiday crush.
The storms also blasted Yosemite, where a flash flood watch was in effect through Friday. Two to four inches of rain were expected and officials issued road closures in the valley late Thursday.
Until plows can catch up to the storm, travelers in the Eastern Sierra are encouraged to carry snow chains. High-wind advisories were also in effect, as gusts neared 100 mph.
The storms will bolster Mammoth’s current base of 30-to-84 inches. Canyon and Eagle lodges are now open, along with expanded terrain. The status of various trails can be found here.
The mountain celebrates its Night of Lights on Saturday. The event is free, though ticketed indoor viewing areas are sold out.
Conditions permitting, June Mountain, Mammoth’s kid sister to the north, opens Friday, with family-friendly trails and free lift tickets for children 12 and under.
