Linda Whalen was working in Santiago, Chile, last fall, when she decided to travel north to the Atacama Desert -- one of the driest places on earth -- over a long weekend. "I loved the stark, lunar landscapes, which are unlike anything I've seen," she said. "What a contrast with Santiago and the nearby coastline, which looks a lot like Northern California with its rolling hills, rocky coast and verdant hills." The Beverly Hills resident used a Canon PowerShot SD1000.
