Gay marriage rulings: Where to go to celebrate
It’s been dubbed Decision Day, and celebrations are planned from New York to San Francisco to mark the Supreme Court rulings Wednesday that struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8.
Gay rights and civil rights groups have planned rallies to celebrate the ruling on DOMA that says married same-sex couples are entitled to the same rights as other married couples, and the procedural ruling on Proposition 8 that clears the way for same-sex marriages to resume in California.
In the Los Angeles area, a rally will be held and streets will be closed at 5:30 p.m. at San Vicente and Santa Monica boulevards in West Hollywood. “Wear red, white and blue to show your patriotism!” the notice on Marriage Equality in California Celebration’s Facebook page says.
San Francisco plans a rally and celebration at 6:30 p.m. on the corner of Castro and Market streets organized by Day of Decision San Francisco.
In Sacramento, groups such as the Love Is Love Movement, the Sacramento LGBT Community Center, Marriage Equality USA and others are planning a rally and celebration at 6 p.m. on the west steps of the Capitol on 10th Street between L and N streets and followed by a celebration in the mid-city area.
Elsewhere, New York’s famed Stonewall Inn, the namesake bar associated with the 1969 gay rights riots, will hold an event at 5:30 p.m. local time, and Philadelphia will host a roster of speakers at a rally at People’s Plaza near 5th and Market streets at 6 p.m. local time.
