The Huntington Hotel is one of those grand old San Francisco buildings in a grand old neighborhood: Nob Hill. Though it bears the name of one of the four railroad barons (Henry Huntington) who built their estates on the hill, it was a banker, not a rail man, who once made his home at the site.
Here's a chance to sample the elegant hotel and its surroundings with a deal that takes more than $100 off the best available rate.
The deal: This is one of online travel discounter Jetsetter's California on Sale offers with rooms at the hotel starting at $180 a night. The building, which dates to the early 1920s, was last renovated in 2010, and there's a cable car stop right outside the entrance.
When: The offer is good until 9 a.m. (Pacific) Tuesday for stays through June 30.
Tested: I checked the booking calendar (Jetsetter is one of those websites on which you reserve a room when you buy) and found many April weekend dates offering what's called standby status (basically you're wait-listed) for the cheapest rooms. However, I found availability for Mother's Day weekend (May 10-12) for $180 for a room with a king- or queen-sized bed.
The rate held up when I compared it with other online discounters. Travelocity and Booking.com both showed rates for those dates at $299 a night plus tax, which also was what the hotel's website showed too.
