Long Beach Airport: Magnificent floor mosaics resurface during renovation
When Long Beach Airport cuts the ribbon on its new terminal Wednesday, some eyes might be drawn to the past. Recent renovations revealed stunning floor mosaics finished in 1941 by Works Progress Administration artist Grace Clements.
The bright colors and geometric images of seagulls and fish, oil rigs and even a telephone dial attempted to create a picture of a city on the move. Most breathtaking of all: the world map that unfolds before visitors on the first floor. Unfortunately, murals that Clements also created are long gone.
Go and see the mosaics on your own or call (562) 570-2678 for a guided history tour.
