Long Beach: Airport’s new passenger concourse to open next week
The new $45-million passenger concourse at Long Beach Airport (LGB) will open Wednesday, months earlier than expected at the site that’s been a landing strip in Southern California since the 1920s.
The 1941 Art Deco airport building will be enhanced by the new concourse that adds 35,000 square feet of shops and eateries, gate arrival and departure seating as well as a garden area in the middle with palm trees and other plants. The ribbon-cutting is set for 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Anyone who has flown in or out of Long Beach in the past year will be relieved to be done with the temporary structures that offered cramped seating in gate areas, outdoor portable lavatories and a super-small bar/store. Of course, Legends Restaurant & Bar on the second floor and Daugherty’s Cafe remained open during construction, but they are located before the security screening area.
Ground broke on the new concourse just two years ago. The new terminal is part of a $120-million renovation plan for the airport that includes a new on-site parking structure, which opened last year, and other upgrades to the vintage airfield.
About 3 million passengers annually use the airport served by JetBlue, US Airways, Delta and Alaska Airlines.
