New Graceland exhibits for 2013: Elvis in Las Vegas and in Hawaii

Elvis fans, there’ll be a whole lotta jumpsuit viewing goin’ on in 2013.

Graceland will roll out two new travel-themed exhibits at Elvis Presley’s Memphis, Tenn., home this year, one about his movies and concerts in Hawaii and another about the King’s Las Vegas years. Each promises artifacts that haven’t been displayed before.

“Elvis’ Hawaii: Concerts, Movies and More!” opens Jan. 8 on what would have been his 78th birthday. This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the concert “Aloha From Hawaii” that was broadcast on TV by satellite from Honolulu.

It will feature footage of Elvis traveling to Hawaii for the first time and his first Hawaiian concert in 1957 along with jumpsuits (both of his trademark American Eagle styles) he wore during later concerts on the islands. Other items include a gold lame jacket he wore during that first show, a tiki mug created as a promotional item and movie memorabilia from “Blue Hawaii” and “Paradise, Hawaiian-Style.”

“Elvis: Live From Las Vegas,” which opens March 8, kicks up the wardrobe count a notch: his first onstage jumpsuit from 1970, his leather and chains suit, his three-piece flower suit, his “I Got Lucky” jumpsuit (named for the 1971 album of the same name that features him wearing it) and others. It also adds a 30-foot customized marquee made for Vegas’ New Frontier Hotel when he performed there in 1957.

The exhibits will remain in place throughout 2013 and join “Elvis ... Through His Daughter’s Eyes,” about his daughter Lisa Marie, which has been extended a year.

Tickets to Graceland, which is open year-round, cost $33 to $70 for adults, and $29 to $70 for children and teens.
