London: Kate Middleton’s impending arrival sets off a baby photo boom

Share

The impending birth of Prince William’s and Kate Middleton‘s first child has set off a boom of another sort as businesses throughout England cash in with baby-related merchandise and activities.

The Athenaeum Hotel in London is extending its own very proper welcome with a celebratory tea and exhibition of more than 40 rarely seen photos of the royal children, from Victorian times to the present day.

The “Royal Child,” curated with Royal Life Magazine, includes a rare photo of Queen Elizabeth as a 4-year-old that was discovered in a London bookshop.

On weekends until Aug. 31 guests will be able to view the photographs while taking afternoon tea and listening to insights and anecdotes from royal photographers Ian Pelham-Turner and Helena Chard.

Pelham, who has worked with four generations of the royal family, took the first official photographs of baby Prince William with Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

There are two sittings for tea on Saturdays and Sundays, at 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The cost is 60 pounds per person (about $93) and includes honey roast ham, arugula and red onion marmalade sandwiches, orange-blossom scones and traditional cakes and pastries, including Victoria sponge cake with royal icing and Battenberg cake.
