London: Yachts start around-the-world Clipper Race
And they're off! Twelve competitors in the Clipper Round-the-World Yacht Race took off from London on Sunday for the first leg of a 40,000-mile journey that will circle the globe. Expected finish time: 11 months. Organizers supply identical 70-foot yachts that bear the names of countries or corporate sponsors. The first leg of the race ends in Marina da Gloria in Rio de Janeiro. Then it's on to South Africa, western Australia, Singapore, China, San Francisco, Panama, Jamaica, New York, Ireland and the Netherlands before a return to London next July. In total, 670 crew members, many of them novices who signed on to learn the ropes, will work to make this fleet complete the course. Stay tuned!
