Now open, Mountain High welcomes skiers with $25 lift tickets

Add nearby Mountain High to the list of early ski resort openings in California.

The resort in Wrightwood, 90 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, opened Friday after this week’s storm and cold weather combined to make for an adequate blanket. Lift tickets are reduced to $25 until the resort is open top to bottom. If cold weather allows continued snowmaking, that full opening could come as early as next weekend.

For now, Mountain High skiers can work out the off-season kinks on the undemanding Cruiser, a beginner to intermediate trail. Coyote chairlift will operate this weekend from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Resort officials say freestyle skiers and snowboarders can access eight to 10 features, including jumps, rails and fun boxes.

The resort’s services are limited until more terrain opens up. Ski and snowboard rentals are available, but no lessons will be taught until more space opens.

Mountain High’s season-pass window will open at 7 a.m., and the Big Pines base lodge will open at 8 a.m. for takeout food items. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, as available trails and terrain are limited.

“We wanted to open as soon as we could to get folks out on the trails and enjoying the long-awaited 2015-2016 winter season,” marketing exec John McColly said in a release.

On Thursday, Mammoth Mountain opened after receiving almost three feet of snow at the top. Mt. Rose, located 25 miles from Reno, also opened this week. The openings added to the high hopes that heavy snows predicted for this season are panning out.
