‘Nutcracker’ as you’ve never seen it: Elaborate ice sculptures in Nashville tell the holiday tale

Whether or not the weather outside is frightful, the larger-than-life ice sculptures at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville are delightful.

This year’s “ICE!,” an annual Christmas attraction at the hotel, features amazing scenes from “The Nutcracker” that are hand-carved by 40 artisans from Harbin, China. Harbin is known for its winter festival, one of the largest ice and snow shows in the world.

More than 2 million pounds of ice, carved in intricate detail, portray smiling soldiers, elegant ballerinas and other characters in a fantasyland of lollipops and candy canes that are on display now through Jan. 2.

The exhibition, presented by Pepsi, also features ice slides that are more than two stories high; “The Frostbite Factory,” where artisans can be seen working on various creations; and “On the Blocks,” a chill bar where guests 21 and older can sample alcoholic beverages such as Jackson Morgan Southern Cream and Goose Island Beer.

Tickets cost $24.99 for adults and $17.99 for children ages 4 to 11 (Monday through Friday) and $26.99 for adults and $19.99 for children ages 4 to 11 (Saturday and Sunday). Children 3 and younger are free.

Ice shows, with different holiday themes can also be seen at Gaylord National in the Washington, D.C., area, Gaylord Palms in the Orlando/Kissimmee area of Florida, and Gaylord Texan in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Admission prices vary by location.
