Lighthouse Day celebrates bright and shining pieces of our past
Lighthouses were once essential to navigation on the high seas, but technology has rendered them almost obsolete. Still, these beacons of the night have a place in history and in our affection. On Aug. 7, 1789, Congress approved the construction of lighthouses, and it is on this day that National Lighthouse Day is commemorated, reminding us to hit the road (or the high seas) and rediscover active and historic lighthouses from California to the East Coast. Here's a sampling of what you'll find.
