New Year’s Eve: Miley Cyrus in Miami; Bill Maher in Honolulu
Times Square in New York City and the Las Vegas Strip seem to have a lock on the ultimate New Year’s Eve parties. But if your travel plans don’t take you to those places, you may want to welcome 2014 with Miley Cyrus in Miami or Bill Maher in Honolulu. Either way, you’ll need a ticket -- before they sell out.
Miami: The twerkster herself Miley Cyrus and Pharrell Williams, nominated for seven 2014 Grammy Awards, will cohost a poolside NYE bash at the luxe Fontainebleau Miami Beach. About 1,000 people are expected to party on the hotel’s ocean-facing lawn. Right now, Cyrus is only hosting and counting down (no commitment of a song or two) but anything could happen. Williams is to perform along with DJ Afrojack. You don’t have to be a hotel guest to go. Tickets start at $275 each and go up to $40,000 for 30 VIP seats with lots of party perks (prices don’t include service charge). Info: Fontainebleau tickets
Niagara Falls, Canada: Bundle up and bring a passport for this celebration that starts with a free concert starting at 8 p.m. and stars pop singer Demi Lovato with Canadian singer Serena Ryder and the Sam Roberts Band. It’s all part of the runup to midnight and fireworks that will be shot over the falls when the new year arrives. The fun takes place in Queen Victoria Park on the Canadian side of the falls, where the Winter Festival of Lights, the country’s biggest illuminated festival, continues through Jan. 31. Austin, Texas: Willie Nelson and Friends will play an “Austin City Limits Live” concert at the Moody Theatre on -- where else? -- Willie Nelson Boulevard. The country star will be joined on stage by Delbert McClinton and Glen Clark. The event features a Champagne toast too. The show starts at 9 p.m.; tickets cost $59.50 to $279 each, and yes, they’re still available. Info: “Austin City Limits Live”
Honolulu: Fireworks will be going off at the Ko Olina Resort (site of Disney’s resort) and at Waikiki Beach. But if you want to lighten up, Bill Maher will be performing at the Blaisdell Concert Hall starting at 8 p.m. This is no family show from the always political, always edgy, sometimes appropriate Maher.
