Offbeat Traveler: Plain of Jars in Laos
The Plain of Jars, located on the Xieng Khouang plateau in northern Laos about 100 miles northeast of Vientiane, is composed of thousands of stone jars arranged in clusters. The jars, ranging from a few feet in height to almost 10 feet, were carved about 2,000 years ago, and archaeological evidence suggests they were used in burial rituals. The site was bombed extensively during the Vietnam War, so only certain parts of the area are safe for sightseeing. More info is at the Laos government’s tourism website.
