Don’t miss this lighthouse by the Golden Gate

Point Bonita Lighthouse, an underappreciated gem with staggering views, stands at the south tip of the Marin Headlands.

Just a few minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge, at the southern tip of the Marin Headlands, stands one of the most dramatically placed lighthouses on the West Coast — Point Bonita Lighthouse, the star of this short video.

With so many tourist attractions in the area (including the town of Sausalito and the island of Alcatraz), the little lighthouse doesn’t get enormous attention. But the structure goes back to the 1870s and its light still shines.

Three afternoons a week, visitors can walk through the tunnel and across the walkway to stand with the lighthouse above a wave-smashed bluff. The view is good.

“A Minute Away” is a series of short videos in which travel writer Christopher Reynolds takes you around the world. He’s covered Machu Picchu, Red Square, the Yucatan, the Alamo, an Alaskan float plane and the reading room of the New York Public Library, among other places. Since early 2013, we’ve been adding a new minute every week or two (and some of those “minutes” are closer to 120 seconds). So if you’d rather spend two hours away, we’ve got more than enough here for you…
