Russia: Let the (other) games begin in Sochi
Sochi, Russia, will host the 2014 Winter Olympics, and as a warm-up to that, it is hosting World Cup events. Christopher Reynolds, a reporter for the Los Angeles Times Travel section, is in Sochi for a preview of the venue of the Winter Games. That may have you scratching your head because Sochi in southwestern Russia is best known as a warm-weather resort. But look past the mineral springs to the Caucasus Mountains, where the winter events will take place. Although snow has been light so far this winter, the investment in the facilities and infrastructure has not: The Moscow Times reported Sunday that the cost so far is $50 billion, making these the most expensive Games in history.
