June Mountain, the tiny ski and snowboard destination that Mammoth Mountain management closed after last winter to save money, is to reopen in the winter of 2013-14, Mammoth officials said.

Mammoth Mountain officially opened its ski season Nov. 8., as a storm was beginning to dump more than a foot of snow in the Eastern Sierra. The previous Monday, Rusty Gregory, chief executive of Mammoth, told the Mammoth Times that June Mountain would reopen in late 2013 with its marketing focused on young families. Mammoth management said details would follow.

June Mountain lies 20 miles north of Mammoth off U.S. 395 in the village of June Lake on the scenic June Lake Loop. Business owners in June Lake, facing their first winter in decades without a ski operation in town, say they are adding special events and in some cases reducing prices in a bid to keep the small town alive through the winter; details here.

The town, a popular fishing destination in summer and leaf-peeping venue in fall, lies about 7,600 feet above sea level. It includes 17 lodgings, eight restaurants, four nearby lakes and lakeside views of Carson Peak. Though road signs give June Lake's population as 613, locals say the winter population may be fewer than 500.
