Five adventurous places to see this year, from Josh Gates of 'Destination Truth'
Syfy's "Destination Truth" TV series sent Josh Gates out to spend the night in King Tut's tomb and in the temple at Cambodia's Angkor Wat. He has done time at the nuclear accident site of Chernobyl, in Ukraine, and climbed Africa's highest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro. What does it take to ratchet up the adventure factor on your next trip? Gates will offer his advice at the Los Angeles Times Travel Show on Feb. 23 and 24 in a session called "From Monster Hunting to Mojitos: A Guide to Adventure in 2013." Until then, here are five destinations Gates recommends to get you started.

Panama( Arnulfo Franco/Associated Press )
Talk about the best of both worlds. When you first land in Panama City, the skyline is a futuristic shocker. The country is, after all, the economic shining star of Central America. So spend an afternoon at the Miraflores locks of the Panama Canal, enjoy the pulsing nightlife, and then grab a backpack and head out into the jungle. There's as much biodiversity here as in the Amazon, and it's much more accessible, with a lot fewer anacondas. The best part? It's all just a three-hour flight from Houston.
