Cambria Scarecrow Festival is outstanding in its field

More than 200 entries are beginning to get stuffed in Cambria, where the upcoming Scarecrow Festival is a fall highlight. Residents like to say it’s the final straw of the season.

The annual event, introduced by the Cambria Historical Society in 2009, features a cast of whimsical scarecrows that spend the month of October decorating Moonstone Beach and the East and West villages of this Central California coastal community.

“This isn’t the kind of event that could happen just anywhere,” said Sue Robinson, festival co-chair. “The whole town gets involved, even down to the kids — and there’s a sense of pride about it.”

Among the cast of characters at the Cambria Scarecrow Festival are Curtis, a 7-foot-tall, pumpkin-poaching ogre; a group of singing nuns, a scuba-diving scarecrow and a 100-foot-wide Wizard of Oz display.

The scarecrows will be on display from Oct. 1-31. There is no charge for viewing them. Info: (805) 909-9000.
