Take jars of peanut butter and jelly on international trips. Good local bread is always enhanced by a little PB&J on the road. And we’ve concocted berry syrup out of jam when we made French toast one morning in Tuscany.

Take an extra pair of socks for long flights. Your feet tend to swell when you fly so plan to take off your shoes and stretch your toes during a long flight.

Don’t believe everything you see online. We discovered that when we checked in at a hotel in Paris that we booked online. It was an absolute nightmare. We ended up finding a cute boutique hotel with Parisian flair in the trendy Marais district by walking up to the hotel without a reservation. (Many such hotels save a handful of rooms for walk-ins.) The rate was great because they wanted to fill those rooms.

Check to see if your bank — that is, the bank you will be withdrawing money from — has an agreement with any banks in the countries you are traveling to. Otherwise, you’ll pay a fee for withdrawing from an ATM.

If you’re traveling with a group of friends, have each person feed the kitty with $100, then use that money to pay for lunches, museum entry fees, taxis and so on. Put someone in charge who’s good with math. Saves time and effort for everyone.

Keep your itinerary with you and, when traveling by train in a foreign country, keep your luggage within sight. I had to change cars in France and left my luggage in the first car. When I arrived at my destination my luggage was gone along with my entire itinerary.
