THE BEST WAY TO CHELAN, WASH.

From LAX, Alaska, Virgin America and United offer nonstop service to Seattle; Southwest and United offer direct service (stop, no change of plane); and Southwest, Alaska, United, Virgin America and Delta offer connecting service (change of plane). Chelan, at the southeast end of Lake Chelan, is about 175 miles east of Seattle, about 155 miles west of Spokane.

WHERE TO STAY

Campbell's Resort, 104 W. Woodin Ave., Chelan; (800) 553-8225, http://www.campbellsresort.com. Some 170 rooms (all facing lake), spa, restaurant, pools. Rooms for two $245-$310 in summer. (As with all the lodgings that follow, rates drop dramatically in colder months.)

Wapato Point Resort, P.O. Box 426, Manson; (509) 687-9511, http://www.wapatopoint.com. Vacation condos from $225 (studio) to $360 (three bedrooms) a night in summer. One-week minimums in July and August.

Lake Chelan Best Western Lakeside Lodge & Suites, 2312 W. Woodin Ave., Chelan; (800) 468-2781, http://www.lakesidelodgeandsuites.com. Some 93 rooms. Indoor pool. Next to Lakeside Park and beach. Rooms for two about $190-$310 in summer.

Riverwalk Inn, 204 E. Wapato Ave., Chelan; (509) 682-2627, riverwalkinnchelan.com. Twelve rooms, about $79-$175 in summer. Cafe serves breakfast and lunch and often Thursday dinner in summer.

WHERE TO EAT

Sorrento's Ristorante, Tsillan Cellars Winery, 3875 Highway 97A, Chelan; (877) 682-8463, http://www.tsillancellars.com. Lunch and dinner. Dinner main dishes $16-$32.

Bistro Vin du Lac, 105 Highway 150, Chelan; (509) 682-2882, http://www.vindulac.com. Dinner main dishes $18-$28.

Lake View Drive Inn, 323 W. Manson Highway, Chelan; (509) 682-5322, lakeviewdriveinn.com. Priciest menu item is a nine-piece chicken bucket for $15.50.

WHAT TO SEE

The Lady of the Lake's daily passenger ferry service to Stehekin, (888) 682-4584, http://www.ladyofthelake.com, includes a fast boat, 21/2 hours each way, $59 a round trip; and a slow boat, 4 hours each way, $39 round trip.

Chelan Seaplanes; (509) 682-5555, http://www.chelanseaplanes.com, flies between Chelan and Stehekin (mid-May through late October) at $79 each way ($170 round trip) per adult for the 25-minute trip.
