Captivated by Sanibel, Captiva

“Florida’s Treasure Islands” (Dec. 1) brought back wonderful memories. I lived on Sanibel Island until I was 13, doing my best to emulate Bud Ricks of the “Flipper” television series. Now, 24 years after my unwilling departure, I visit as often as possible while I plot a permanent return.

Although writer Susan Spano had a good experience on Captiva and at Sanibel’s western end, I have always found the island’s eastern end to be more authentic and charming, with the best beaches and swimming.

The area from Lindgren Boulevard east to the lighthouse includes Old Town Sanibel (www.oldtownsanibel.com) and a cluster of more intimate hotels than are found elsewhere on the islands.
