Winter stargazing party in the Santa Monica Mountains, and you’re invited

Share

Take a tour of the night sky in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area on Saturday evening when the moon will be a thin crescent and night sky visibility should be good.

The Winter Star Party, hosted by the National Park Service and the Ventura County Astronomical Society, will be held at Paramount Ranch in Agoura, which is part of the national parkland.

Visitors will be available to view star clusters and objects in the Milky Way Galaxy with telescopes at a location far from city lights, according to a news release.

The evening starts with a ranger talk from 6 to 6:30 p.m. and then night-sky viewing until 8:30 p.m.

Bring a red lens flashlight (so you don’t blind folks with a regular flashlight) and dress in layers because it may be chilly. The first 200 visitors will receive hot chocolate.

Paramount Ranch, which is a filming location that dates to the 1920s, is at 2903 Cornell Road; parking and admission are free. Rain will cancel the event.
