Two California beaches make top 10 list for family friendliness

California beaches in Carlsbad and Lake Tahoe (lake beaches count!) made Family Vacation Critic’s list of the 10 best U.S. beaches for families in 2015.

Lincoln City Beach in Lincoln, Ore., won top honors.

What makes for a family-friendly beach? Editors at the website, which is part of TripAdvisor, looked for beautiful beaches that also had nearby lodgings, restaurants and entertainment options that would be convenient for families.

The presence of lifeguards (a big plus), family activities, beach rentals and food stands were taken into consideration too.

Carlsbad State Beach, sometimes called Tamarack Beach for the street it’s near, was singled out at No. 5 for its welcoming family atmosphere. Parking is free if you get there early, and kids and their parents can enroll in surfing classes at the beach during summer months.

No. 10 Kings Beach on the north side of Lake Tahoe near the California-Nevada border received high marks as a good picnic spot. It includes a state recreation area and is close to Tahoe Central Market, where you can stock up for a gourmet outdoor meal.
