Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like ... this home on a luxury cruise ship

If you’ve ever taken a cruise and said, “I think I could live on this ship,” now you can -- if you have the cash, of course.

Crystal Cruises is diving even deeper into luxury travel with a major expansion.

For starters, it plans to debut three ships in its Exclusive Class, to be delivered starting in 2018.

The ships are to feature all suites and carry just 1,000 guests each.

On these ships, 48 cabins on the top decks will be sold as Crystal Residences, a floating home away from home. Cabin sizes start at 600 square feet and top out at 4,000 square feet, a Crystal announcement said.

No word yet on how much they’ll cost.

Crystal is not the first to create residences; other companies such as the World and Utopia sell private residences aboard cruise ships.

Crystal’s new push also includes launching yacht cruises, more river cruises, and Dreamliner jet service.

It plans to begin yacht cruises aboard the Crystal Esprit (to be delivered in November) with a Dec. 23 cruise to the Seychelles Islands. The all-suite yacht holds just 62 guests.

Passengers will have opportunities to water ski, wake board, kayak, snorkel and scuba dive. The yacht will bring along a two-person submarine, 10-person zodiacs and a 12-person yacht tender for special activities.

At the moment, suites are on sale only to repeat Crystal guests. Prices for the maiden voyage start at $5,940 per person.

Crystal plans to follow up with itineraries in Dubai, Italy/Croatia and Croatia/Greece.

The cruise line in 2017 plans to launch Crystal Luxury Air to fly 60 passengers on round-the-world itineraries to remote locations and top hotels and resorts. Flights aboard the roomy 787 Dreamliner with business-class seating are to travel nonstop to places other airlines don’t.

Crystal also plans to expand its river cruise offerings starting in 2017.

Crystal gets high marks. Travel + Leisure readers named it the top ocean cruise line for 2015, and Conde Nast Traveler readers chose it as the best midsize cruise line last year.
