One of the best and cheapest eating experiences in Honolulu is the Saturday morning Farmers Market at Kapiolani Community College. I've spent a lot of time at farmers markets in Marin County, in Portland, and other places, and this ranks with the best of them.

On a recent road trip, we had an astonishing meal at a year-old restaurant named Table 24 in the little British Columbia town of Salmon Arm (between Vancouver and Calgary, Alberta). It was an enormously pleasing and satisfying meal, wholly unexpected.

We just returned from a trip to Germany and Austria. Here's a warning: Not one shop we went into took credit cards. Cash only. And the banks in the smaller towns would not cash a $100 bill. When we cashed American Express traveler's checks, the bank took 11% (ouch).

I recommend EVA Airways as a wonderful way to fly to Hanoi. There is an elite class that is comfortable for those who need more leg room and wider seats but who don't want to spend for business class, but the seating and service are fine in coach as well.

My niece, Julie McKay, and I had our second two-hour session at Thermae Bath Spa in January. We luxuriated in the warm waters of the open-air pool. We felt as though we were in a bottle of Champagne. We got our hair wet under a small waterfall, then descended to the steam rooms. I do recommend a visit."

We were pleasantly surprised to find a fine restaurant in Exeter on the way to Sequoia National Park. The atmosphere is friendly and casual and the food good and inexpensive with some gourmet specials.

Homey feel at the Homestead resort in Utah Fifteen minutes outside of Park City, Utah, we stayed at a homey resort called the Homestead in Midway. Aveda spa, nice pool, golf course, tennis courts and lovely setting. Free concerts on Saturdays in summer.
