Whale Rock: Chris Reynolds 'Where am I?' quiz
Test your coastal geography with this image.
The locals call this beach formation Whale Rock, which means those amateur fireworks on top are rising right out of the blowhole. The nearest city -- whose name I defy you to guess -- is 7 miles from here. Here are your hints: That is the Pacific lapping at this sand. San Francisco is to the south, Portland to the north. The mouth of the Ten Mile River is just out of the picture. A little more about this mystery city: Pomo Indians used to live here and for a while in the 19th century there was a reservation, complete with a fort built by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Later the reservation dematerialized -- nothing in that bit of history for anyone to boast about -- and a logging town emerged, complete with its own railroad line for lugging redwood logs.
