Where am I?: Pier review

There are more than 100 piers in California, and in an ideal world, they’d all look down upon sand and rocks unmolested by human hands. Alas, here we are. The good news, though, is that this T-shaped concrete pier, which went up in 1966, reaches nearly 2,000 feet in length, offering room for plenty of fishing and an over-the-water cafe. There’s no amusement park, so you know this isn’t Santa Monica or Santa Cruz. And there’s no fortune teller, so it’s not Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara. And though this neighborhood’s main drag is Newport Avenue, we’re not in Orange County. We are, however, within 100 miles of the Mexican border.
