Where Am I?: Rock on!

See if you can name this close-to-L.A. location.

It's granite. It's within 150 miles of Los Angeles. And rock-climbers have been creeping up and down this hunk of stone since at least the 1930s, when a bunch of Sierra Clubbers took an interest. By name, the rock sounds like a bad guy from a Wagnerian opera. But it's really named for a bad guy in Cahuilla folklore. Depending on who's counting, there might be 120 or 300 routes up, bearing names like Open Book and The Vampire. Also, the nearest town to this rock used to share names (but not spellings) with a big New York airport.
