Anthony Portantino’s mother dies at age 81

Barbara Garrone Portantino, mother of former Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, died on Friday, Jan. 25.

She was 81.

Portantino decided not to run for office last year after his term expired in part to care for his mother, who lived in New Jersey.

Barbara Portantino visited the Southland frequently over the years to visit her family here, and was a familiar face to many La Cañada residents.

Her son said that, in lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to Elizabeth House at elizabethhouse.net or Friends of Project Ten, project10.org.

Services will be held in her home state next week. No local service is planned.
