County pitches in for Ultimate Destination Point project

A scenic lookout with views of the San Gabriel Mountains and La Cañada Flintridge got a boost Monday from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

The city has been waiting for additional funding for the Ultimate Destination Point project, which would install water fountains for hikers and horses and a rest area with trees. Supervisors approved $30,000 toward the project, which would allow the city to move forward with construction as soon as March.

The city approved the project in September and is expected to award the project to a contractor at the next City Council meeting on Feb. 19.

Liz Blackwelder, the La Cañada resident who pushed for the project, donated $35,000 of her own money.

The city received other donations from private citizens, the La Cañada Flintridge Trails Council, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and Southern California Edison. The city will need to put down about $44,150 to complete the $136,000 project.

The work could be completed as early as May, if weather permits, said city trails coordinator Arabo Parseghian.
