PTA ready for ‘Halloween Haunt’

La Cañada Elementary School on Encinas Drive will be teeming with activity Saturday when the PTA stages the annual Halloween Haunt. Hours for the event are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This is a family affair, with games, an obstacle course, costume contests and other activities for children and a tent full of silent-auction items to entice their parents. Food for all ages, including Korean barbecue, will be available for purchase.

According to organizers, some of the auction items are set visits to TV shows; vacation packages to Lake Arrowhead, Oxnard and Tucker’s Point Villa in Bermuda; a Mardi Gras party for 30 and Barefoot Contessa Recipe Party, premium seat Dodger tickets, “Yo Gabba Gabba” and Rush tickets; House of Blues Gospel Brunch; meals at Sakura or Taylor’s Steak House with an Ultra Magnum of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay.

The Halloween Haunt is the largest fundraiser for La Cañada Elementary and is open to the public. To learn more, visit www.lcepta.org.

Los Altos taking orders for centerpieces

Orders are now being accepted for Thanksgiving centerpieces that are being created by members of the Los Altos Auxiliary. This fundraiser is in support of the boys, ages 6 to 18, who resided at the Hathaway-Sycamores El Nido treatment facility in Altadena.

The harvest-styled centerpiece includes evergreens, eucalyptus, fresh flowers and fall foliage, with fruit and vegetables as accent, in a basket, measuring approximately 16 by 13 inches. Centerpieces are $65 each, and orders need to be received by Thursday, Nov. 8, for delivery on Monday, Nov. 19, to homes in La Cañada, La Crescenta, Pasadena, San Marino, Glendale, Tujunga and South Pasadena.

Centerpieces can be ordered directly from the Los Altos website, www.losaltosauxiliary.org. For more information contact Linda Yaussi at (818) 522-8283 or email joesmom@mac.com.

Author to speak at One City One Book

Ron Carlson, the author of “The Signal,” will address community members participating in this year’s One City One Book program Sunday, Nov. 4. The event will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the La Cañada Unified School District board meeting room, in the round brick building at 4490 Cornishon Ave.

Local author Mark Salzman will moderate the program. Attendees will have the opportunity to have their copies of “The Signal” signed by Carlson.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, the La Cañada Flintridge Public Library, 4545 Oakwood Ave., will be the venue for a children’s event based on the camping setting in “The Signal.” Children will listen to stories, participate in crafts and enjoy a camp-out treat.
