Hopeful 27 vie for Miss La Cañada Flintridge Court

Mindy DiPaolo and Jane Owens of the La Cañada Junior Women’s Club announced that some 27 high school juniors turned out earlier this month for the first round of personal interviews as the 2012-13 Miss La Cañada Flintridge competition got underway. The club cosponsors the program with the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and Community Assn.

According to DiPaolo and Owens, the five judges had a difficult time narrowing down the field, as the applicants showed strength in the areas that are considered for the honor of serving on the court: academics, sports, extracurricular activities and volunteerism. Callbacks were expected to go out this week to those who will continue in the competition and the court will be announced on the afternoon of Dec. 7, when the LCF Chamber of Commerce stages its annual Festival in Lights at Memorial Park.

A formal coronation ceremony will be held in January at the chamber’s awards and installation dinner. Miss La Cañada Flintridge will receive a $500 scholarship and each court member will receive a $250 scholarship from the chamber, along with several gifts from local merchants.

Applicants who participated in the first round of interviews included Taline Albarian, Brittney Andrews, Tracey Andrews, Taylor Ashfar, Stephanie Beck, Daisy Beckner, Clara Chen, Kendall Eberhardt, Laura Emmons, Marne Fairhurst, Brenna Gay, Laura Green, Chelsea Johnson, Madison Johnson, Megan McPherson, Ada Narvaez, Courtney Perry, Annette Persson, Lori Pridjian, Alison Roth, Nora Sagal, Natalie Schulz, Jenna Schwartz, Savannah Stehlin, Laura Thompson, Alissa Winter and Taylor Winter.

Local Democratic Club to host Common Cause advocate

The Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club will hold its monthly meeting from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18 at the home of Mary Freeman and Michael Davis. Members and guests are welcome; those who are interested in attending are asked to call (818) 249-9691 for directions.

The featured speaker will be John Smith, a full-time representative for Common Cause who has worked on issues ranging from public financing of federal and state elections, to changing the filibuster rules in the U.S. Senate.
