La Cañada History: Les Fleurettes debutantes take their bows to society

Ten Years Ago

The city granted permission for the renaming of a private access road in front of the new headquarters of La Cañada-based Sport Chalet, Inc. from Houseman Street to “Sport Chalet Drive.”

Twenty Years Ago

La Cañada Flintridge Postmaster Penny Stevenson reported the community donated more than 6,700 pounds of non-perishable edibles during the local post office’s food drive. The items were delivered to the Salvation Army in Pasadena for distribution to families in need.

Thirty Years Ago

High winds swept through the area on Dec. 24, 1982, toppling a 100-foot deodar on Green Lane, blocking the driveway of Bill and Sue Watson and impeding traffic on the street. Neighbors and friends of the Watsons turned up on Christmas morning to help cut the tree and clear their driveway.

Forty Years Ago

The first baby born at the newly opened Verdugo Hills Hospital was Trevor James Heady, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Heady of La Crescenta. He was born at 12:18 p.m. on Dec. 21, 1972 and weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces.

Fifty Years Ago

Twenty young women were preparing in December 1962 to take their bows to society as Les Fleurettes debutantes at the La Cañada Thursday Club’s Bal Blanc de Noel. The event was held in the Viennese Room of the Huntington-Sheraton Hotel in Pasadena (today the Langham Huntington).

Sixty Years Ago

Some 400 local families on Christmas Day 1952 would have their first opportunity to worship in the new St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church, it was announced by the Rev. Father Paul Early. He added that, beginning with the Dec. 25 holiday, the building would be used for all of the church’s services.
