Crime Report: Woman alarmed by intruder, alarms intruder

Dec. 9

Petty theft, unlocked vehicle: 2200 block of San Gorgonio Road. A man told deputies that sometime between 7 a.m. the day before and 7:15 a.m. that day, someone stole an iPhone from his unlocked 2009 Infinity G37 while it was parked in front of his home. When the victim activated the tracking on his phone, he saw it was pinging from a Rite Aid store in Los Angeles. A deputy advised him not to contact the suspect by phone, instead referring the matter to police in that area.

Dec. 11

Burglary, residence: 1900 block of Hilldale Drive. A man reported that sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., someone pried open a rear sliding glass door, ransacked three bedrooms and the living room before making off with several hundred dollars in cash, an Xbox video game system and various pieces of jewelry. The suspect appeared to have left through the same door, since all other doors and windows were locked. No witnesses or video surveillance footage could be located.

Burglary, residence: 400 block of Oliveta Place. A woman left her home at 10:38 a.m., securing all the doors and windows but not activating her home alarm. When she returned at 12:15 p.m., entering through the locked entryway door, she saw someone had broken the glass on a rear door, placed a blanket over her dog’s kennel to placate the animal and had ransacked the house. The victim said she believed the suspect entered through a back gate that was left open. The victim said several pieces of jewelry were stolen. No witnesses could be located.

Dec. 12

Burglary, residence: Normandy Court. A woman said she was sleeping in her third-floor bedroom when she heard a loud noise coming from the master bedroom. She walked to the room and saw a person’s silhouette inside. She screamed, alarming the suspect, who also screamed and ran out onto the balcony and out of view. The victim ran out of the house and called 911. Deputies determined the point of entry and exit to be a glass door in the master bedroom, as all other windows and doors were still locked. The glass door had been shattered with an unknown object and there were pry marks on the frame. The suspect left an aluminum ladder, not belonging to the residence, outside used to reach the balcony. The home has a security camera, but the victim did not know how to operate it. She said she didn’t notice anything missing. Fingerprints were ordered.

Dec. 13

Burglary, residence; petty theft, unlocked vehicle: 5600 block of Bramblewood Road. A man reported that sometime between 12:01 and 7 a.m. that morning, someone entered his unlocked Toyota Highlander while it was parked in front of his home. The suspect took a watch and a garage door opener, which was used to gain access to his garage. A “Milwaukee Sawzall” saw being used by a contractor was stolen, but the victim didn’t know if anything else was missing. Fingerprints were ordered.

Burglary, vehicle: 4463 block of Oak Grove Drive. A woman at La Cañada High School reported that sometime between 1:30 and 4:06 p.m., someone smashed the front passenger window of her 2014 GMC Terrain and stole a Coach messenger bag containing her driver’s license, Social Security card as well as a set of car keys and work keys. No witnesses could be found, and while there were cameras pointed at that area, deputies were unable to view the footage.

Grand theft; theft by access card: 4400 block of Commonwealth Avenue. A woman reported that sometime on Sept. 20, someone had stolen a diamond ring and emerald earrings from her home and used her credit card to make fraudulent charges while she was hospitalized at USC-Verdugo Hills Hospital. When she came home three weeks later, she noticed the jewelry and card were missing from her coffee table. Besides her daughter, the only other person who was in the home was a person employed by the daughter to clean the house. When the victim called the person, she reached her grandmother, who was uncooperative and would not put the person on the phone. Deputy attempts to contact that person were unsuccessful, and the victim initiated a fraud investigation through her credit company.

Dec. 15

Petty theft, unlocked vehicle: 600 block of Pomander Place. A man told deputies that between midnight and 4:30 a.m. that day, someone entered his unlocked 2006 Chevy Suburban and his wife’s 2002 Mercedes E320 while they were parked in their driveway and stole several items. The man reported his briefcase had been stolen from the passenger seat and that prescription medicine was taken from the center console. His wife said her garage-door remote and financial paperwork had been taken from her vehicle’s glove compartment, while sunglasses were stolen from the center console. Deputies observed both vehicles had been ransacked and consoles left open. Both victims were uncertain as to whether anything else was missing. No witnesses could be located, but fingerprints were ordered.

Dec. 11

Burglary, residence: 2900 block of Mayfield Avenue. A man reported that sometime between 8 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. that day, someone broke into his house and stole his passport from the Philippines. When the victim returned home, he noticed clothes had been strewn across the floors of two bedrooms and his passport was missing from the dining room table. Deputies observed a southwest bedroom window had been shattered and appeared to be the point of entry and exit. Neighbors interviewed said they did not hear or see anything suspicious.

Dec. 14

Grand theft: 4500 block of Raymond Avenue. A woman told deputies that sometime between 8:30 and 8:40 p.m. that day, someone stole her purse from where it sat on a pew inside the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church. Once the victim noticed it was missing, she asked around but could not find anyone who’d seen what happened. The stolen Lancôme purse contained a digital recorder, an iPhone 6, home and vehicle keys and a wallet containing $100 and various cards. The church does not have video surveillance.

Dec. 14

Petty theft: 2200 block of Mira Vista Avenue. A man said someone entered his unlocked 2003 Lincoln Navigator between 8 p.m. the night before and 4 p.m. that day while it was parked on the street and stole a Verizon tablet, a tool bag containing miscellaneous roadside tools and 10 pages of personal paperwork. Deputies noticed evident fingerprints on the front passenger door, which was left ajar. The victim said the back passenger’s side door had also been opened and the vehicle ransacked. Fingerprints were collected on the scene, but no witnesses could be located.
