Debris basins in La Cañada hold up under heavy rain
Debris basins in the Paradise Valley neighborhood of La Cañada – devastated by mudflows in 2010 – held up in the rainfall on Friday, residents and police officials said.
According to the National Weather Service, the Foothills regions were expected to see rain in excess of an inch an hour, and a flood advisory in effect until Saturday morning.
Pat Anderson, a homeowner in the area and president of the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce, said the debris basin had been cleared out prior to the storms and seemed to be handling the heavy rainfall. No mud or debris was visible on her street, she said.
“We are so far OK up in the Paradise Valley,” Anderson said. “We are seeing a lot of clear water, which is good.”
Anderson left her house during the day to tend to business, but said her daughter, Kathryn Markgraf, who also lives in the area, is staying home to monitor the situation and will alert her if there are any problems.
“I’m worried about the Haskell and Big Briar Way neighborhood,” Anderson said, “because they had their K-rails removed.”
Though there were no signs of flooding or debris Friday morning in the Foothills, area sheriff’s deputies did lose power at the Crescenta Valley Station.
Power was knocked down for about two minutes shortly before 9:30 a.m. at 4554 Briggs Ave., just north of Foothill Boulevard, said Lt. Elisabeth Sachs.
Sheriff’s deputies were patrolling the area for any potential power outages or flooding, she said.
“We check our debris traps often. They were pretty cleared out. Right now we’re OK,” Sachs said.
