“We’re very excited to put a new spin on an old favorite,” stated LCFEF Endowment Fund Trustee Chris Davis, in a news release issued by the foundation this week. “The wine we have is truly spectacular and the setting is idyllic — it’s going to be a great evening in support of our schools.”

Tickets, priced at $175 per guest, can be purchased by visiting www.lcfef.org/lcf-wine-auction or by calling (818) 952-4268.

Local group plays part in creation of Orthopaedic Institute for Children

For their September meeting, members of the La Cañada Flintridge Orthopaedic Guild visited Orthopaedic Institute for Children in downtown Los Angeles, where they were given a tour of its new ambulatory surgery center.

The local group contributed $100,000 toward the 13,000-square-foot center, which has two operating rooms. In the hallway outside those rooms, there is a plaque thanking the guild for its donation.

During their visit, guild members took the opportunity to shower Danielle Barrios, assistant director volunteer services for the institute, with good wishes and gifts for the upcoming arrival of her first baby.

The guild’s main fundraiser in support of the institute is an annual Book and Author Luncheon. This year, that event will be held Oct. 25 at Angeles National Golf Club. Locals interested in attending this event are asked to contact Marianne Jennings (818) 398-7323 or Joan Cleven (818) 249-4603.

Lunafest traveling to Thursday Club

Community members are invited to attend the second annual Lunafest film festival on Sunday, Oct. 16, at the La Cañada Thursday Club, 4440 Woodleigh Lane. Hours for the program, which includes a reception, no-host wine bar and nine short award-winning films, are 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Lunafest is a traveling festival showcasing films by, for and about women. This year it is traveling to more than 175 cities. According to the Thursday Club’s Community Relations Committee, it is the only film festival in the country that combines women-only filmmakers with a community fundraising campaign.

The Oct. 16 event will benefit breast cancer research, as well as the La Cañada Thursday Club Foundation. Tickets are $20 each and will be available at the door on the afternoon of the festival.

Accepting the certificate on behalf of the organization was its president, Donna Shepherd.

The group supports and administers philanthropic programs, including ALF Drama, Retired Service Volunteers, Operation School Bell, Community Needs Assessment and Outreach, and ALF Instrumental Music.
