SPORTS ROUNDUP: La Cañada High boys’ swimming dominates South Bay Invitational

BOYS’ SWIMMING

La Cañada in South Bay Invitational: Brandon Nguyen and the Spartans rewrote the South Bay Invitational record books en route to La Cañada winning 10 of 11 races and taking the event title with 436 points. Palisades (340) was runner-up.

La Cañada set six new South Bay records Friday with Nguyen setting two individually in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke in one minute 54.78 seconds and 58.93, respectively.

Dane Bell also set a new meet record in the 500 freestyle (4:37.59), while Garrett Chin, who took second in the 200 individual medley, did the same in the 100 backstroke (58.93) and the Spartans’ 200 medley (1:39.28) and 400-freestyle relay (3:18.53) teams did the same.

La Cañada also saw Bell win the 200 freestyle in 1:45.17, Peter Loakes (22.19) and Symeon Stefan (23.04) go one, two in the 50 free. Loakes also took the 100 freestyle (50.45) and the Spartans 200-freestyle relay team (1:34.52) was also victorious.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

La Cañada in South Bay Invitational: The Spartans received a number of standout efforts in Friday’s event, while placing sixth as a team with 186 points. Palisades (464) won the event.

Samantha Campbell turned in a pair of runner-up finishes in the 500-yard freestyle in five minutes 34.29 seconds and 100 backstroke (1:03.19).

Rachel Wong also took second in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.05 and fourth in the 100 freestyle (58.06) for the Spartans.

Wong and Campbell teamed up with Gina Choi and Caitlyn Seto for a second-place finish in the 200-medley relay (2:03.82). Shelby Hopkins also took third in the 100 butterfly (1:04.82).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

La Cañada 3, Temple City 0: An 18 kill, 12-dig performance from Jonathan Sullivan helped the Spartans sweep their second Rio Hondo League match at Temple City, 25-19, 25-20, 26-24, Thursday.

A number of players put up big stat lines for La Cañada, especially considering the sweep, as Orion Burl had 13 kills, Connor Belcher had 22 digs, Connor Walbrecht had 37 assists and Mel Schroeder had 10 kills. The Spartans are now 12-8, 2-0 in league.
