Street Smart: VDOT tentatively plans HRBT work for after Columbus Day

’s new plans to complete the repaving of the eastbound side of the

Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel

, include tentatively scheduling the work after

Columbus Day

, according to Friday’s press announcement.

It will take one to two more weekends of work to complete the job, VDOT said.

“VDOT will not shut down the eastbound tube over an entire weekend – day and night. Work will take place during the weekend nights and the tunnel will be open over the day-time and early evening hours.”

The new plan also stipulates that while tunnel work takes place, the

James River

Bridge will remain open, and the MMMBT will be the alternate route.

Prior to last weekend’s debacle, eastbound closures at the HRBT were scheduled for the weekends of September 14, 21 and 28 (rain date) from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. Southbound closures at the JRB were scheduled for consecutive weekends from Sept. 14 to Oct. 12. Then, northbound lane closures were to follow for four additional weekends.
