In the Blue Ridge District, the William Byrd Terriers made the short trip out route 24 to neighboring Staunton River. Coach Chuck Poston was looking for their first Blue Ridge win at home this week.
Byrd threw the first punch, as Daryl Preston broke a tackle, and took off all the way to the endzone for an early 7-0 Terrier lead.
After a Golden Eagle field goal made it 7-3, Staunton River would answer Byrd's big play for one of their own. Chris Tyree broke away from the line, and he was off to the races down the near side, it was a 64 yard score to give the Golden Eagles a 10-7 lead.
In the second half, River was up 13-7. A great defensive play from Tyree, he got the QB sack to keep momentum and gave the ball back to the O. They would make the most of it too. Deshawn Martin took off down the far side on the keeper and turned on the after burners. He was dragged down, but it was too late, it was a touchdown for Martin. Staunton River got their first district win tonight 19 to 14 over William Byrd.Copyright © 2015, Los Angeles Times
